Portsmouth Orthopedics, LLC provides a full range of physician prescribed orthotics, including both custom fabricated and custom fit devices. Through an evaluation with one of our board-certified orthotists, a course of action will be decided upon that takes into consideration the goals of the physician, physical therapist, and most importantly you – the patient. We will present and discuss all of the appropriate options available to you to ensure that a device is chosen that will most successfully restore function, allow independence, and enhance your lifestyle.
About Orthotic Devices
There are many conditions that may necessitate the use of an orthotic device. Some of the more common conditions are listed below:
- Musculoskeletal Conditions – scoliosis, plantar faciitis, congenital abnormalities, arthritis, tendon rupture, cancer, fractures or other trauma.
- Neuromuscular Conditions – stroke (CVA), multiple sclerosis (MS), diabetes, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury.
- Post-surgical conditions – includes support or immobilization of anatomy resulting from fractures and/or tendon and ligament repair.
Each of these conditions can be accompanied by several symptoms that are treatable using an orthotist. Some of the more commonly treated symptoms are: hemiplegia, foot drop, lower limb instabilities, leg length discrepancies, chronic neck and back pain, and discomfort or pain due to trauma or surgery.
Despite the many scenarios that may require an orthotist, the goals remain the same:
- to provide added support to the patient’s existing anatomy
- to promote proper alignment of the body’s skeletal structure
- to correct or prevent deformity
- to allow for increased function or decrease pain and discomfort

Contracture Bracing: Contractures most often occur in the skin, the tissues underneath, and the muscles, tendons and ligaments surrounding a joint. They affect the range of motion and function in a certain body part. Often, there is also pain. Your provider’s instructions for treating contractures may include doing exercises and stretches. Using bracing and splinting, we provide and assist in custom fitting of all contracture bracing.
Pediatric Orthotics: We specialize in pediatric orthotics to help kids find their stability and independence. Some of our advanced orthotics include AFO, hinge AFO, DAFO, SMO, derotation straps, custom HEKO and pullover AFO. A few conditions can include: spasticity, joint hyperextension, adolescent scoliosis and other neuromuscular disease.
Scoliosis Bracing: Orthopedic doctors typically recommend scoliosis bracing for kids and teens who are still growing and have a curvature of 25 degrees or more. The primary goal of a scoliosis brace is to keep the curve from progressing to the level that requires surgery. Always consult your physician specific to your case.
At Portsmouth Orthopedics, we provide both the Boston Brace 3D® and the Rigo-Cheveau Brace along with others specific to the pathology and referring physician request. Our goal is to make this experience as comfortable as possible and educate all parties involved in the best interest of the patient.
Diabetic Footwear: People with diabetes are at high risk for foot health complications. For those who qualify, Medicare and other insurances cover therapeutic shoes and inserts. There are many complications that can arise with the diabetic foot, so diabetic shoes are made with foot health in mind. They are built wider and deeper than a traditional shoe. The interiors are made with soft materials and are free of bulky seams that could cause irritation. The best part is, your feet will be measured by Portsmouth Orthopedics to ensure you achieve an optimal fit.
